Locally called the
Bharal, the Blue Sheep
is well camouflaged to survive in rocky, icy,
mountainous areas. The male
is brownish
grey, tinged slate-blue, with black flanks
and leg stripes; its smooth,
rounded horns splay outwards. The
female is smaller, with shorter horns, and lacks most of
the male's black markings. This
sheep freezes when alarmed, its
cryptic coloration helping it
merge with the background,
and takes refuge in the most
inaccessible rocky places
to escape from predators.
Bharal are confined to the
northern ranges of the
Himalayas
and Karakorams
at great elevations. They are
rarely found below 4,500m (15,000ft) and in summer may regularly occur
up to 6,500m (21,500ft). Thus they live in relatively arid
mountain steppe country beyond the
monsoon influence and above the
limit of tree growth, and are typically associated with broad
stony valleys and shale ridges at the foot of higher mountain peaks in
regions characterized by extreme cold in winter and
aridity throughout the year.
In
Pakistan the Bharal is only found in the
remotest northern region of the north-eastern
border region of Hunza and on the
eastern watershed of the great
Baltoro Glacier system in Baltistan. It has been
recorded as occurring in `considerable numbers'
around Shimshal. At one time it occurred in the Baltoro Glacier valley above Passu
but there ado recent reports that it survives that far west.
Several mountaineering
expeditions to
K2 in the Karakoram
reported seeing
Bharal on the southern slopes of the surrounding
mountains, particularly above the Baltoro Glacier.Several herds of
Bharal can be find on the right bank of the Braldu valley, this
region being near the head of the Shimshal valley.
Blue sheeps
are highly gregarious and diurnal in
feeding habits. Living in
such remote mountain
regions they normally do not suffer much human
disturbance and may graze intermittently throughout
the day, especially in the early summer when
succulent new growth is
available. But they are
principally active in the early morning, for a
short
period
midday
and again in the evening. Schaller,
studying Bharal in
eastern
found that they also fed actively around
midday,
having two distinct rest periods each day between
early morning and evening
feeds. They may associate
in herds of thirty to forty individuals,
but the mature rams usually keep in separate small bands of five to
six and remain at higher remoter elevations than the
female and young mixed herds. The males have been
characteristically described
as keeping as close as
possible to the permanent
snow line, even in summer.
