 Nilgai “Blue Bull”

The name “Nilgai” means blue cow in Urdu though the females are yellowish-brown and0nly the bulls are blue-grey. The Nilgai has been assigned a monotypic genus but it is in most respects a typical antelope, and is considered quite closely related to the eland of Africa.

This is savannah-adapted species. The Nilgai is endemic to Pakistan and India. The tropical thorn forest,  uncultivated semi-deserts of Pakistan ,mainly occurring around the India border in the north eastern corner of the Punjab and further south around Fort Abbas in Cholistan. Small population still exist in Changa Manga (Kasur) and Lal Suhanra (Bhawalpur) irrigated forest plantations, and in Tharparkar areas in Sindh from across the Indo-Pak border. It is absent from Assam, Eastern Bengal or Kerala but still occurs in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajastan and Kathiawar, as well as the Deccan.

The horns of the male are cow like in appearance, being back, conical and curving slightly backwards and outwards. These horns, despite the large size of the animal, generally measure only15.2-17.8cm(6-7in) though 30cm(11.75in) is on record.

Now with effect from game season 2004-2005, Wildlife department of government of Punjab allowed to harvest the Nilgai trophies with special permit for Khanewal Plantation. This package is only offered to local hunters from Pakistan and this is the excellent addition in the legal hunting offers by the department.

Hog deer native to Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Thailand, & Srilanka. The Hog Deer is closely related to the Cheetal (Axis axis). The length of the horn is about 30 to 39 cm. Adult male stand about 61-71 cm (28-28 in) high at the shoulders. They measure 107-112 cm (42-44 in) from nose tip to root of tail. The tail is about 18-24 cm (7-9 in) long.

The Hog Deer is not a social animal and lives a solitary existence, although in regions where they are plentiful it is possible to see several animals feeding in the same vicinity. They oftenly emerge in small groups to start foraging in the early evening in the region where they are not disturbed. while running they outstretched their neck and  head held very low.

This posture, together with their size and general coloration, has no doubt given rise to the name “Hog Deer” because of their superficial resemblance to fleeing wild boar which are encountered in the same habitat. The Hog Deer confined to isolated pockets of the river jungles in the less accessible regions of the  Chenab, Ravi near Indo-Pak border in the river forests of the Indus as well as in Bhawalpur, D.G.Khan and Lahore Civil Division.

They are fairly wide spread through the higher mountain ranges of Baltistan in the Karakoram Range, the Haramosh range, and the probably the highest population of Ibex now survives in Northern Hunza, specially in the water shed of Khunjerab, and to the east of Khunjerab.
