Chitral Kashmir Markhor Hunt

The word ‘mar’ and ‘khor’ is Farsi (Persian) means ‘snake’ and ‘eater’ and most writers about this wild goat make some speculative comments as to how the application arose. The name more probably arose as a corruption of the Pushto word ‘mar’ (meaning snake) and ‘akhur’ (meaning horn) – an apt allusion therefore to the serpentine shape of their horns.

A larger flare-horned northern population and in the southern part of their range, a smaller variety having strait horns with a tighter twist. The distinction in typical horn shape between four relatively isolated populations surviving in Pakistan is still today easily discernible. There is considerable variation in size between the northern Himalayan population and those inhabiting the hotter drier mountain ranges to the south.

Markhor  Distribution
Typically associated with steppic mountain conditions and regions of meager erratic rainfall, Markhor are quite adaptable ecologically, being found from 600m (2,000ft) elevation in the completely treeless hot and arid hills of southern part of the Suleiman range up to 3,600m ( 12,000ft) in the Himalayas in association with juniper and birch scrub forest. They avoid the higher altitudes frequented by the Himalayan Ibex and stick to the more precipitous mountain sides, never feeding on the more open alpine slopes frequented by the latter species. In early summer when new growth of grasses occurs the Himalayan Ibex and Markhor can be seen foraging on the same steep slopes and within visual range of each other.

Astor Markhor

The Astor Markhor hunting is Community Based trophy hunting program under the trophy hunting project of IUCN & Mountains Area Conservancy project of North. The habitat of these animals is in the Gilgit, Skardu and Astor regions of northern Pakistan in the valleys which branch off from the River Indus. Astor Markhor is confined to Gilgit region and its real strong hold on the slopes of Nanga Parbat Massif.  In comparison with the Kashmir, their horns curves are wider. Like the Kashmir, the Astor is in the flare-horned Markhor category.

It also occurs on both sides of the Astore River and in Nalter up the Indus Valley as far as the Haramosh Range in south-western Baltistan. There is some overlapping of this subspecies with animals carrying horns of the Pir Punjal type, particularly in Haramosh.

The climate in area is in Summer up to 300 C, Winter  cold-with minimum temperature as low as

 -110 C  to -150 C.

The Torghar Conservation area is divided into a "core” and an outside "buffer" zone. The core zones is lightly grazed while there is a heavy grazing pressure on the buffer zone. The core area is a rectangle approximately 35 km long by 20 km wide. The western limit of the core area is a location called Tor Gh'berg

Torghar Hills, Killa Saifullah District, Baluchistan are a chain of rugged mountains approximately 90 km long and 20 to 25 km wide. The altitude varies between 2,500-3,300 meters.
